Firefighting not enough, BJP tells Govt.

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JULY 11. Doing some firefighting is not enough when there is a serious problem, and instead it was the Government's responsibility to ensure that the interests of innocent depositors are safeguarded, the Bharatiya Janata Party president, Mr. Jana Krishnamurthi, said with reference to the Unit Trust of India scandal that led to the resignation of its chairman.

However, Mr. Krishnamurthi felt that there was no reason for the Union Finance Minister, Mr. Yashwant Sinha, to resign even though earlier he said ``the buck stops here.'' He was accountable to Parliament, a thorough probe had already been ordered and he hoped the guilty would be brought to book.

Mr. Krishnamurthi confirmed that at the party meeting on Tuesday where Mr. Sinha was present, the UTI issue was raised by Mr. Kushabhau Thakre, former party president, but briefly. The BJP was extremely concerned as the money of millions of depositors was involved. Talking about yesterday's interaction between the party and some Ministers and the Chief Ministers, he indicated that there would be a series of similar meetings, but next time the Chief Ministers may not be asked to come.
