Vittal for tough digital signature norms

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JULY 11. The Central Vigilance Commissioner, Mr. N Vittal, today suggested security audit and tough regulations for digital signatures to provide deterrent punishment to hackers.

Speaking at a seminar on digital signatures and computer security organised by the Assocham, Mr. Vittal suggested a three-fold approach for ensuring safety and security of digital signatures - fool-proof in-house security systems, security audit and punitive powers to the regulator to bring the hackers to book.

``Since crooks are human, there is need for a clever understanding of the criminal psychology, and systems should be so designed that in-house breach of security is reduced to the minimum,'' he suggested.

Mr. Vittal said technology created opportunities for creating frauds but also provided the strength to check frauds.

Agencies like accounting firms were developing a new dimension of fraud examiners.

The association of certified fraud examiners had a role to play in ensuring that an effective culture of alertness and security consciousness was built up as Indian industry used more of information technology.
