U.N. not to give unedited video to Israel
UNITED NATIONS, JULY 11. The United Nations Secretary-General,
Mr. Kofi Annan, will not provide Israel the unedited version of
the video film showing possible kidnappers of three Israeli
soldiers in southern Lebanon, the U.N. spokesman has said.
``We are offering the edited version of this tape to be viewed by
Israel on humanitarian grounds. We don`t want to do anything that
could be construed as sharing of Intelligence. That is not our
role in the area. So that offer now continues to be on the
table,'' Mr. Fred Eckhard said on Tuesday.
The U.N. offer that Israeli view an edited version with faces
blacked out has been rejected by Tel Aviv, and U.S. Deputy
Ambassador, Mr. Cameron Hume, told the Security Council that the
tape, which was filmed by peacekeepers, should be made public.
