Civil aviation official 'exposes' security lapse

By S. Vijay Kumar

MADURAI, JULY 11. Security lapses at the Madurai airport surfaced much to embarrassment of the Indian Airlines officials here today when a passenger, who managed to reach the aircraft without security check, turned out to be a top official from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).

Official sources told The Hindu that passengers of the scheduled IC 671 Chennai-Madurai flight alighted and reached the terminal building.

One of the passengers, with a white box, went back to the aircraft. He was neither intercepted by the security staff nor was his box screened. The passenger pulled up the security personnel and revealed his identity. He was Mr. G. Banerjee from the BCAS, New Delhi.

The baffled officials cutting a sorry figure, Mr. Banerjee gave a brief lecture on security. Later, he inspected security arrangements at the airport and also visited the Madurai district police out-post.

Mr. Banerjee is scheduled to hold a security meeting with officials on Thursday and offer a training programme on security strategies and preventive operations later this week, the sources said.
