Memory Asiad-2001 begins tomorrow
CHENNAI, JULY 11. About 60 memory experts will display their
acquired skills of memorising and recalling over 2,000 random
digital numbers, 5,000 words, perpetual calendar and other memory
tests at the Memory Asiad-2001 to be held at IMAGE auditorium
between July 13 and 15.
Organised by the Madras Academy of Excellence, the championship
will culminate in a `memory show' at the Nehru Stadium on the
evening of July 15, in front of an audience of over 6,000 people.
Contestants include participants from Sri Lanka, Bangla Desh,
Nepal, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. The jury will be
headed by Mr. K. Gnanaprakasam, Judge, Madras High Court.
Dr. J. N. Reddy, MAX director, addressing mediapersons said
research indicated that the retention capacity of the brain was
only 20 per cent after 24 hours. While geniuses were known to
utilise about 15 to 18 per cent of their brain cells, the
utilisation level of the `grey cells' by intellectuals was less
than 10 per cent. Normal persons could enhance their memory and
develop their personality by channelling their brain power
through techniques of ``sequencing and filing.''
The first two days of the championship, which is co sponsored by
the Ryan Group, Traxx Automobiles and TheHindu will be held in-
camera. The Academy will also organise a memory fair at Loyola
College on August 3 and 4, at which memory experts will
demonstrate their skills.
