Scotland wins, Ireland loses
TORONTO, JULY 11. Scotland remained on course to advance to the
final while Ireland moved a step closer towards elimination after
day two of the International Cricket Council Trophy super league
series on Tuesday.
The top-seeded Scots, who pummeled the Irish by seven wickets on
Monday, coasted to another easy win, humiliating the United
States of America by five wickets with 4.1 overs remaining at G.
Ross Lord Park.
Wicketkeeper Colin Smith continued his fine form, hitting an
unbeaten 64 to help his team reach the required 160 needed for
victory. Smith and skipper George Salmond, who was promoted to
the opening slot, shared in a second wicket stand of 54 in 15.1
overs.
The efficient Scottish bowling attack took advantage of winning
the toss on a wicket that offered some assistance early in the
morning to restrict the USA to 159 off 47.5 overs. Opener Rohan
Alexander and skipper Richard Staple scored 41 and 37
respectively. Keith Sheridan was the Scots most productive bowler
with four for 23.
The Irishmen are on the verge of falling out of contention, after
being bounced by the United Arab Emirates in a high-scoring match
that produced 568 runs for the loss of 15 wickets on a batsman's
paradise at Toronto Cricket Club ground.
The Irish raced to 283-7 off 50 overs after electing to bat
first. Left-handed Edmund Joyce led the scoring onslaught with 87
off 84 balls while his brother Dominick scored 62 off 84 balls
with two boundaries.
Wicketkeeper Andrew Patterson made 55 and Jason Molins chipped in
with 37 in 68 minutes. The Irish bowlers however could not
contain the UAE batsman, who launched a vicious assault. UAE
opener Arshad Ali contributed a wonderful innings of 102 off 114
balls with 13 boundaries.
