NHRC grants 15 days for T.N. Govt.'s reply

NEW DELHI, JULY 12. The National Human Rights Commission today
granted 15 days to the Tamil Nadu Government to send its reply on
the issues involving the arrest of Mr. M. Karunanidhi, the former
Chief Minister and the two Union Ministers, Mr. Murasoli Maran
and Mr. T.R. Baalu.
According to sources, the Commission, at its meeting, presided
over by its chairperson, Mr. Justice J.S. Verma, granted time
sought by the State Chief Secretary.
The Commission had on July 2 took suo motu cognisance of media
reports and a complaint sent by an NGO in Tamil Nadu on the
arrest of Mr. Karunanidhi and issued notice to the Chief
Secretary to respond within a week.
In his response, the Chief Secretary informed the Commission that
as many issues had been raised in the notice, it might take more
time to gather the necessary information and wanted 15 days to
furnish the details.
The Commission had brought to the notice of the State Government
that indiscriminate arrests had been made without strictly
complying with the requirements of law laid down by the Supreme
Court in the D.K. Basu case and the guidelines issued by the
Commission.
