Swamy wants Sinha to resign

BOSTON, JULY 12. The president of the Janata Party, Dr. Subramanian Swamy, has sought the resignation of the Finance Minister, Mr. Yashwant Sinha, for ``betraying public interest'' in the UTI scam.

``It may be recalled that I had raised this matter in the Lok Sabha in the winter session of 1998 on how certain business houses were milking the US-64 scheme, and pointed out that a CBI inquiry had submitted a report seeking permission to proceed with prosecution of the guilty. But Mr. Sinha misled Parliament then to protect his patron business house which had cornered the loot by cross purchases,'' he said in a statement.

``Now before winding it up, twelve corporate houses were tipped off to liquidate their holdings in April and early May by a lady finance executive based in the U.S. Mr. Sinha, however, cannot proceed against her without incriminating himself. Hence for wanton irresponsibility and connivance in the fraud, he should resign,'' Dr. Swamy said.

``The BJP Government at the Centre is filled with the stench of corruption, with the Prime Minister, Mr. Vajpayee, as the most corrupt PM since Independence. Since the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha is in league with him in the loot, there is no alternative but to form a new front to topple this Government,'' he said.
