Two soldiers held for rape
By Nirupama Subramanian
COLOMBO, JULY 12. Two soldiers have been arrested for the alleged
rape of a 42-year-old woman in Thenmarachchi area of Jaffna
earlier this week.
A defence ministry release said the two suspects had been handed
over by the military to the police for further investigations.
The military had initially said the rape was an attempt by the
LTTE to discredit the army and disrupt the resettlement of
refugees in the area, but said that further investigations had
indicated that two soldiers ``could have been involved''.
Meanwhile, Jaffna University has not yet reopened. It was shut
down last week on orders of the vice-chancellor following
protests by students over the arrest of an undergraduate student.
