CPI(M) wants arts college to function full time

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JULY 12. Mr. T. Murugan, CPI(M) secretary, has urged the Pondicherry Education Minister, Mr. A. V. Subramanian, to ensure that the Government Tagore Arts college at Lawspet here functioned on a full-time basis.

He said his party delegation held meetings with concerned sections and came to know that the college had been functioning under shift system for the past nine years. The system was introduced when there were no sufficient classrooms. Now classrooms were constructed.

If classes were held throughout the day students would have more practical classes. At present, class hours were not fully utilised. There should be a close monitoring of the working of the college, which was the first to come up in the post- merger days of Pondicherry. (The college was first housed in the Calve College, the then government high school after the school was temporarily accommodated in thatched sheds at Muthialpet from 1961 to 1966. A full-fledged campus was got ready in 1966 at Lawspet under the Congress administration and the college shifted to the new campus. The Calve College was brought back to its earlier spacious building on Mission Street).

Mr. Murugan said not less than Rs.10 lakh was being spent every month for the college. It was a pity that neither the Minister concerned nor officials had ever visited the college to see for themselves the prevailing situation. For a strength of some 1700 students, only one bus was being operated by the college authorities.
