Educate people on development activities: Rajani Rai

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JULY 12. The Lt. Governor, Dr. Rajani Rai, today said the role of media in a democracy was crucial and there was also need to educate and enlighten the people on various developmental activities taking place in various fields.

Releasing the monthly English magazine, `News from Pondy' brought out by the Department of Information and Publicity, at a function in the Rajivas here, she said the department should bring out the progress achieved by the Government and its organisations in various fields through informative publications.

Dr. Rajani Rai appealed to the Government to ensure that the publication of the annual administration report was revived. The department should ensure regularity and continuity of the publication, besides upholding the norms of objectivity in the write-ups. The department is already bringing out Puduvai Seithigal, a Tamil magazine.

The Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham, who received the first copy, lauded the efforts of the department in bringing out the magazine which would help in projecting the achievements of the administration in various fields.

Mrs. M. Sathiavathy, Secretary, Department of Information, said an English magazine was first started in 1960, but it was discontinued in 1968. Each department would be able to project their achievements and the schemes implemented in the magazine. As there was a sizable section of people who could not read Tamil, the department decided to bring out the magazine in English. This would prove helpful to the people of the Mahe and Yanam regions, where different vernacular languages were spoken.

Dr. R. Padmanabhan, Principal Secretary, Pondicherry was present. Mr. A. Selvaraj, Director of Information and Publicity, proposed a vote of thanks.
