Press and its freedom

Sir, - This has reference to the report, `No consensus on media council,' (July 6). In their letter to the Minister for Information and Broadcasting on the issue of foreign investments in the print media, they had argued that investments by NRIs, foreign institutional investors and overseas corporate bodies ``will not violate the Cabinet Resolution of 1955 because such investments, in no way, permit the publication of foreign newspapers in India.'' There is, however, the adage to remember: he who pays the piper ends up dictating the tunes. When a camel tries to put its nose into the tent, some selfish interest of the animal is involved, and not altruism for the benefit of the tent dwellers.
