Second gold for Neelam

KOCHI, JULY 13. The seniors on the European tour sent home some good news. National women discus-throw record-holder Neelam Jaswant Singh won her second gold of the tour, at the recent Throws International Meet in Verazdin, Croatia.

The Railway athlete, who had won the IAAF Permit Meet gold in Hungary a few days ago, topped the Croatian event with a throw of 58.69 m. And once again, world junior champion Seema Antil took the silver, with 55.85 m.

Russia, Hungary, Croatia and England were the other countries which figured in the meet.

In the meanwhile, Kerala's K.B. Sivadevan and Gujarat's Abha Rani, the two Indian athletes at the second IAAF Westel World Youth Championships, fared badly on Thursday, the event's opening day at Debrecen, Hungary.

Sivadevan, running the men's 400m, was seventh in his heat with a time of 50.80 secs. He has a personal best of 48.60 in the one- lapper.

Abha Rani was also way below her personal best (2:14.83 secs) in the women's 800m heats at the Debrecen Stadium, 230 kms from the Hungarian capital of Budapest. She clocked a poor 2:27.26 and finished sixth.
