State to release Rs. 15 cr. for drought relief

BANGALORE, JULY 14. The State Government has decided to immediately release Rs. 15 crores for drought relief works, pending seeking of financial assistance from the Centre.

Briefing presspersons, the Principal Secretary, Finance, Mr. Gopal Reddy, said reports from Deputy Commissioners had been received. They would be tabulated and a memorandum would be submitted to the Centre in a week.

Mr. Reddy said the amount was in addition to the Rs. 12 crores released earlier. More funds would be sanctioned considering the situation.

The Revenue Commissioner, Mr. Ramesh Kumar, said as per the reports of the Deputy Commissioners, 121 of the 175 taluks in the State had been affected by moderate to extreme drought. Works would be taken up under various budgetary heads, including the Jawahar Rozgar Yojana, apart from those using the funds released.

Earlier, the Chief Minister, Mr. S. M. Krishna, held a meeting with officials to discuss efforts to tackle the drought.
