Three Indians score brisk wins

DORTMUND, JULY 14 Three Indians in the Grandmaster Open tournament scored briskvictories on Saturday to recover from their doomed result after Friday's walkovers which they conceded due to inattentiveness to the schedule.

Third seed Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte and International Master Devaki Prasad of Indian Oil won in 48 and 23 moves to take their tally to two points from three games.

International Master Ponnuswamy Konguvel of ONGC, Chennai won in 33 moves with the white pieces against Jurge Goldenboog's Caro- Kann defence to move to 1.5 points from three games.

Eight rounds remain to be played in this 102-player Swiss format tournament.

After two rounds, 18 players including former trainer of Anatoly Karpov, top seed Vladimir Epishin are leading with maximum two points. Most other third round games are in progress.

Last evening, the Madras-born former National champion Prasad told The Hindu, ``we could not have lunch because of conceding these walkovers.'' We have not given such walkovers, Prasad said.

Only Konguvel had the programme and it was in German. They did not bother to enquire the timings on Thursday since they arrived one hour before the first round and decided to rest after their games.

Trying to console them, Anand said he too once gave a walk over in a PCA Intel knock out tournament in 1995 at Paris when he understood the French organiser wrong as 1530 instead of 1330.
