Cong. to raise issue in Parliament
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JULY 15. The Congress intends taking up the UTI fiasco
in Parliament during the coming monsoon session. While the
Government's attention was focussed on the India-Pakistan summit
in Agra, the Congress began preparing for the session.
During a meeting of senior party leaders at the residence of the
party president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, last evening, the party
shortlisted a series of issues on which it planned to put the
Government on the mat. Among the issues were the developments on
the economic front, the downturn in the economy and the various
scams that have occurred in the last few months.
The UTI fiasco which has affected millions of US-64 investors
figures prominently on the Congress list. The Government will
also have a lot of answering to do on its handling of the
situation in the northeast, particularly the accord with the
NSCN(I-M). The Congress has been raising the Ayodhya issue, and
Ms. Gandhi has written a number of letters to the Prime Minister,
Mr. A. B. Vajpayee, asking him to direct the Uttar Pradesh
Government to issue a fresh notification in the matter.
