Petition seeks action against Sun TV

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JULY 18. Mr. Justice Malai Subramanian of the Madras High Court today ordered notice to the Tamil Nadu police on a petition seeking action against Sun TV on sedition charges (Section 124-A IPC).

In his petition, Mr. M.M.K. Mohomed Ibrahim of Keelakarai alleged that a ``distorted news'' telecast by Sun TV on June 30, when the former Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, was arrested, resulted in violence in many parts of the State in which hundreds of buses were damaged, and a fear psychosis gripped the general public.

He alleged that the private TV channel had edited the entire event, inserted dubbed voices and misrepresented facts with a deliberate intent to create hatred in the minds of the public towards the police force and the State Government.

Claiming that the ``distorted version'' was telecast continuously for three days, the petitioner said it was an offence punishable under Section 124-A, read with Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 109 (abetment of any offence) IPC.

Admitting the petition, Mr. Justice Malai Subramanian asked counsel for Sun TV, who wanted to make a representation, to file an impleading petition and then submit his views.
