Dubious decisions mar hope of students

THE OSMANIA University has come alive with classes of this academic year beginning on Monday. For most of the fresh students, the feeling of entering into the Arts College or the Science College is yet to sink in while new faces, fresh relationships and great hope on the future awaits them.

Entering into the university portals was a dream come true for a majority of them. As a student of Botany puts it, `It will take a few days before the feeling of studying on the campus college sinks in. The colourful campus, the tranquil atmosphere and the cream of students - I always dreamt of being one among them', she says.

But, those great moments to cherish were marred by some dubious decisions of the authorities, who never shy away from taking the students for a ride. Those getting into the hostels were made to run from pillar to post and their callousness was all-pervasive.

While some of their classmates were having their share of fun in their first class of campus life, most of them were running around the offices of the Chief Warden and the respective principals to get a signature on their hostel forms. But, no complaints, that's a part of the campus life and perhaps also a sign of what awaits them on the campus - running around.

WITH THE academic reforms in full swing, association with foreign academic institutions is on the rise. Yet another institution joining the list is the Badruka Institute for Foreign Education (BIFE), which has come up with an international MBA programme in association with the Edinburgh Business School (EBS), Heriot Watt University, U.K.

Graduates are eligible for the two-year course but students have an option of completing it in three semesters. The examinations are conducted in June and January simultaneously in 122 countries.

They can also pursue a special MBA by electing two more modules. Electives in decision making techniques, financial risk management, human resource, international trade and strategic negotiations are being offered. Admission is done through a written test followed by a personal interview. The fee is Rs.3.5 lakhs.

New softwares

A RESEARCH on the learning abilities of students showed that 20 per cent retain what they hear, 40 per cent retain what they read and 80 per cent remember what they see.

To cash in on the burgeoning believers of this concept, the Visu Cybertech has come out with four new softwares which are rich in visual content and affordable. The softwares cover areas like students testing and evaluation, school management, campus management and syllabus based CDs.

One of the softwares, Acharya, is a comprehensive range of syllabus-based educational CDs for students of Intermediate, Polytechnic and high school. It is an attempt to bring life to textbooks with a fantastic combination of exciting visuals, sounds and text, making learning enjoyable and effective. The material is prepared by top academics and subject experts.

It has also launched `YaQsha', a software that handles examination and evaluation process effortlessly. It incorporates foolproof testing technique for multiple choice questions, formats along with a comprehensive evaluation, scoring and reporting system.

Other softwares include `Chanakya', which is a total college management software that enables effective administration at the click of the mouse. `Vidura' is a hi-end technology tool which provides for total management of the school administration also covering areas like teaching and examinations.
