Shibu Soren loses RS seat
NEW DELHI, JULY 19. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (S) suffered a
major blow today with the Supreme Court setting aside the party
president, Mr. Shibu Soren's election to the Rajya Sabha. It
dismissed his petition challenging a Patna High Court order.
The High Court had held that Mr. Soren was holding an office of
profit under the State Government as chairman of the interim
Jharkhand Area Autonomous Council (JAAC), and was hence
disqualified to contest under Article 102(1)(a) of the
Constitution. It had declared Mr. Dayanand Shahay elected in
place of Mr. Soren.
