Farooq meets Advani
NEW DELHI, JULY 19. The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Dr.
Farooq Abdullah, today met the Union Home Minister, Mr. L.K.
Advani, and apprised him of militant threats to step up violence
in the State after the Agra summit.
During his 20-minute meeting with Mr. Advani, Dr. Abdullah said
militants might try to attack the ``soft targets'' in the State,
official sources said. The Home Minister assured the Chief
Minister of all possible help in case of any stepped up violence
in the state.
Dr. Abdullah's fear stems from the fact that several militant
organisations had threatened to intensify attacks in the State.
The Centre has also withdrawn some Army units from the
insurgency-affected areas of the State. The Chief Minister, who
was camping in the capital during the entire Agra summit, lauded
the role of India during the negotiations.
Dr. Abdullah said the summit should not be termed a ``failure''
as the dialogue process had begun and doors opened for future
discussions. The Chief Minister said the approach adopted by New
Delhi was in the ``right perspective'' and Pakistan will have to
agree that the State is an integral part of the country.
