SC rejects SLPs of IAS officer
By Our Legal Correspondent
NEW DELHI, July 19. The Supreme Court has dismissed, at the
admission stage, two special leave petitions (SLPs) filed by Mr.
K. Suresh Kumar, an IAS officer, against the orders of the Kerala
High Court directing him to produce his two children in the court
for being handed over to his estranged wife.
A three-judge Bench comprising the Chief Justice, Dr. A.S.
Anand, Mr. Justice R.C. Lahoti and Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan,
dismissed the petitions on Wednesday during mention time,
observing that the SLPs were misconceived. The High Court had
earlier directed Mr. Suresh, managing director of the Kerala
Agricultural Development Cooperative Bank, to produce the
children in the court on July 9 and then on July 12. Instead of
complying with the direction, he rushed to New Delhi to file the
SLPs in the apex court.
Taking a serious view of the non-compliance of the earlier
orders, a Division Bench of the High Court issued an arrest
warrant on July 17 against Mr. Suresh Kumar, husband of Ms.
Sangeetha Lakshmana, a lawyer and daughter of the former IG, Mr.
K. Lakshmana, to ensure his presence along with their two
children before the Bench.
In her petition, Ms. Sangeetha had alleged that Mr. Suresh was
keeping custody of the children despite the court orders
directing him to hand over the children to her.
