MUTA regrets syndicate decision against two professors
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, JULY 19. Severely criticising the Madras University
Syndicate's decision to ask two professors to go on compulsory
retirement following an inquiry, the university teachers
association has sought a re-inquiry by a new commission
comprising at least three academicians.
The general body of the Madras University Teachers Association
(MUTA), which met on Monday, took up the issue of the Syndicate's
decision to ask Prof. Maa. Selvaraasan and Prof B. Govindasamy to
go on compulsory retirement.
A one-man inquiry commission, Mr. B. Vijayaraghavan, a retired
IAS officer, found both the teachers guilty of the charges.
A resolution passed said the Syndicate decision showed ``the
Vice-Chancellor's high-handed attitude''. It regretted that the
Syndicate did not punish persons who committed bigger mistakes.
The resolution termed the commission's report as biased, as the
two teachers were not to cross-examine the university's
witnesses. The MUTA wanted the Syndicate to ignore the inquiry
report and instead appoint a fresh committee comprising three
academics; and reinstatement of the two teachers.
