Metrowater appeal to residents
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, JULY 19. The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and
Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has requested residents to take advantage
of its services in implementing the rainwater harvesting (RWH)
systems.
The City could have maximised the benefits of the recent rains
with the RWH. The groundwater table in most parts of the City has
gone down to between 30 m and 60 m from nine to 15 metres
earlier, the board said in a press release.
The commonly used RWH technique is to channelise rainwater from
the terrace to an existing water source like a well, which would
help keep the water table high. A filter bed would have to be
constructed three feet deep and two feet wide. It should be
filled with one foot of blue metal or brick jelly and another
foot of sand, it said.
Many other techniques could be adopted and those interested could
approach the Rainwater Harvesting Cell of the Metrowater Board
for advice in person or contact: 8535976, 8535025 or 8535257-295.
