Karaikal fire: NDA plans rally for July 21

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JULY 19. The National Democratic Alliance in Pondicherry will take out a procession at Karaikal on July 21 to condemn the Government's `failure' to take effective steps to prevent fire accidents in the region.

The former Health Minister, Mr. A. M. H. Nazeem, today said instead of arresting the culprits, the police were taking into custody some innocent persons.

The DMK Legislature Party leader, Mr. R. V. Janakiraman, would lead the rally that would also bring into focus the Administration's failure to extend necessary relief to the victims.

The DMK vice-president, Mr. C. P. Tirunavukarasu, MP, the BJP president, Mr. A. M. Krishnamoorthy, the PMC leader, Mr. K Lakshiminarayaran, the former Assembly Speaker, Mr. V. M. C. Sivakumar, and the DPI leader, Mr. E. Thalayari, would participate in the rally.

Institute probe: BJP

Mr. Krishnamoorthy has claimed that yet another fire was reported on Wednesday at a site close to the scene of the June 23 incident.

Talking to presspersons, he demanded that the Government set up a committee to probe the incidents. The people suspect the hand of `outside elements' in the incidents.

Mr. Krishnamoorthy said the BJP would persuade the Centre not to impose uniform sales tax in the Union Territory.

The Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham, should work out measures to protect Pondicherry.

He said a representative of the Scheduled Caste should be included in the Congress-led Government here.

A delegation led by him would attend the BJP national executive meeting in New Delhi from July 27.
