Asia Pacific crop protection meet to focus on biotechnology
By Our Staff Correspondent
MUMBAI, JULY 19. The Rs. 3,600 crore crop protection industry in
India is hopeful of receiving a boost for pesticides following
the Third Asia Pacific Crop protection conference to be held in
New Delhi in September.
Mr. Pradeep Dave, president, Pesticides Manufacturers &
Formulators Association of India (PMFAI), said the industry was
expected to get initial job work orders of Rs. 50 crores as India
was seen as a major contract manufacturing base.
The first conference was held in 1997 and through this India's
crop protection industry got a foothold in the export market and
was able to post an export turnover of Rs. 750 crores.
Thereafter, Indian exports grew to Rs. 1,500 crores and this is
likely to go up to Rs. 1,900-2,000 crores in the current fiscal,
according to Mr. Dave.
Also, trade enquiries and business transactions at the conference
are expected to result in Rs. 300 crores more of exports. The
industry is also expected to get spot export orders in excess of
Rs. 100 crores.
The conference will focus on issues such as biotechnology,
genetically modified crops, sustainable agriculture, organic
agriculture, recent developments in crop protection and e-
commerce for agro-chemicals. It will provide multinational
companies an insight into the dynamics of Indian markets to aid
their entry into the Indian manufacturing base and has been
organised with the objective of reorienting Indian manufacturers
to the changing global trade environment post-WTO.
