Resolution of Kashmir only way to amity: Musharraf
The Pakistan President, Gen. Pervez
Musharraf, tonight gave a distinct impression that having failed
to reach an agreement at Agra with India on the centrality of the
Kashmir issue to normalisation of ties between India and
Pakistan, he is making an appeal to the people of both the
countries to be the judges and pressure their respective regimes
to get down to resolution of the conflict.
Musharraf derailed summit: Sushma
The Information and Broadcasting Minister,
Ms. Sushma Swaraj, who was criticised by the Pakistan President,
Gen. Pervez Musharraf, and the media for ``selective'' briefing
on the Agra summit, has blamed Gen. Musharraf, for ``derailing''
the talks with the much-publicised telecast of his breakfast
meeting with Indian editors on July 16.
BJP blames it on Jaswant Singh
The Bharatiya Janata Party has started
playing the blame game. While publicly congratulating the Prime
Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, for his ``superb handling''
of the summit- level talks with Pakistan at Agra, in private it
laid the blame at the door of the External Affairs Minister, Mr.
Jaswant Singh, for all that went wrong.
Pak. shelling in Kargil, Poonch
For the first time after the Kargil war,
Pakistan troops today shelled the Kargil, Rajouri and Poonch
sectors. One jawan was reported killed. (According to PTI, four
Pakistani soldiers were killed after the Indian forces
retaliated.)
'Kashmir, not a disputed territory'
India today rejected the assertion by
Pakistan's President, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, that Kashmir was a
disputed territory and reiterated that the border State was an
integral part of the country.
Panel to probe violence
The Sri Lankan President, Ms. Chandrika
Kumaratunga, has set up a commission to probe the anti-Tamil
riots of 1983, an official release said.
Constitution Bench to hear petitions against Jayalalithaa's appointment
A three-member Bench of the Supreme Court
today directed a group of connected writ petitions challenging
the appointment of Ms. Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister by the
Tamil Nadu Governor on May 14 be heard by a Constitution Bench of
the court (comprising not less than five judges). ``Given the
importance and urgency, they be listed in the week commencing
September 3, subject to the administrative directions of the
Chief Justice of India before whom these papers shall be
placed,''it said.
Raid on ex-UTI chief's house
The CBI today raided the premises of the former
UTI Chairman, Mr. P. S. Subramanyam, in connection with a case of
conspiracy relating to private placement of funds. It also raided
the premises of the Executive Directors, Mr. K. M. Kapoor and Mr.
K. Basu, the General Manager, Ms. Prema Madhuprasad, and broker,
Mr. Rakesh Mehta of Renaissance Securities.
Curfew reimposed
Over 130 students, protesting the Naga ceasefire
extension, were injured after being hit by teargas shells and
rubber bullets fired by police here today to prevent them from
entering the Raj Bhavan.
Case against Orissa ex-Dy. CM
The CBI today filed an FIR against the
former Orissa Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Basant Kumar Biswal, who
was holding the portfolios of Water Resources, Finance, and
Parliamentary Affairs, for mis-utilisation of funds received from
international agencies.
