Sivaji left a rich legacy: Sonia

CHENNAI, JULY 22. The Congress president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, today telephonically conveyed her condolences to the bereaved family members of the Sivaji Ganesan.

According to a press release, Ms. Sonia Gandhi spoke to Mr. Ram Kumar, son of the film actor, and expressed her grief.

In a separate condolence message to Mrs. Kamala Ganesan, wife of the thespian, the Congress president described the actor as a ``truly towering personality whose enormous ability and a dynamic charm transformed everything he touched''. He had left the nation a rich legacy of outstanding films and his many valuable contributions to public life. The Dravidar Kazhagam general secretary, Mr. K. Veeramani, expressing deep shock and grief at the demise of the actor, recalled that Periyar had conferred him the title of ``Sivaji'' after seeing his performance as the Maratha warrior in the stage play, ``Sivaji Kanda Hindurajyam''.

``If Sivaji Ganesan had been born abroad, he would have won several Oscar awards,'' the MDMK leader, Mr. Vaiko said.

In his condolence message, the DPI leader, Mr. R. Tirumavalavan, said the film industry had been orphaned.

The Social Justice Party leader, Mr. K. Jagaveerapandian, the Tamil Nadu Indian Union Muslim League leader, Mr. K.M. Kader Mohideen, the Makkal Tamil Desam president, Mr. S. Kannappan and the Tamil Nadu Janata Dal president, Mr. G.A. Vadivelu, were among who condoled the death.
