TDP set to bag about 500 mandals
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, JULY 22. The Telugu Desam is set to have its nominees
as presidents of about 500 mandals and the Congress about 440
mandals, out of the 1,096 mandals in the State.
This is in line with the number of Zilla Parishad Territorial
Constituencies they won in last week's elections which were
marked by the Congress and the Telugu Desam entering into local
adjustments here and there, contrary to the two parties' public
stand. The crucial elections to 22 Zilla Parishads will take
place on Monday.
In Pedakurupadu in Guntur district, where the Congress and the
TDP tied for the president's post with six seats each, there was
tension as one TDP-elected member was abducted and the TDP
organised a big rasta roko.
Police fired in the air to disperse people staging a dharna. But
later, the TDP and the Congress signed an agreement under which
the TDP nominee is to be mandal president for the first two years
and the Congress nominee to succeed him for the remaining three
years of the term.
At Jukkal in Nizamabad district, the BJP gave its support to the
Congress candidate to win. Out of 11 members, the Congress and
the TRS won four seats each while the BJP and an Independent got
one seat each.
Instead of the Congress taking TRS support, they obtained the
support of the BJP and the Independent to win.
In Cuddapah, the Congress won 29 mandals compared to 18 by the
TDP. In Porumamilla mandal, the TDP had seven compared to six by
the Congress but the Congress candidate won with one TDP nominee
supporting its candidature.
In Prakasam district, the Telugu Desam won 37 mandals compared to
19 by the Congress. In this district, there was a tie in four
mandals but in lots, the TDP captured three mandals compared to
one by the Congress.
In Krishna district, the TDP got 23 mandals and the Congress 26.
In Guntur district, the TDP captured 28 mandals compared to 24 by
the Congress and one bagged by Independent.
In West Godavari district, the TDP won 28 Mandals, Congress 13
and Independents 2. In this district, elections were postponed in
three mandals.
In Khammam, the TDP won 15 mandals compared to 11 by the
Congress, six by the CPI and seven by the CPI(M). In this
district, the CPI (ML) New Democracy retained its hold on three
mandals.
In Karimnagar, the TRS won 20 mandals, the Congress 16, TDP 10,
Independents 5 and CPI 1. The BJP which secured 59 MPTCs in the
district, failed to win in a single mandal.
In Nellore, the Telugu Desam won 12 mandals compared to 11 by the
Congress, two by the CPI(M) and one by the BJP.
In Warangal district, the Congress won 18 Mandals, Telugu Desam
12, 11 by TRS and three independents. In this district, elections
to six mandals were postponed.
In Ranga Reddy district, the Congress won 18 Mandals, the TDP 12,
TRS 1 and CPI(M) 1.
In Chittoor district, out of 65 mandals, the TDP bagged 33
