'Allow Sudhagaran to attend funeral'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JULY 22. The deceased film actor, `Sivaji' Ganesan's grand daughter, Mrs. Sathyalakshmi, has petitioned the State Government, to allow her husband, Mr. V. N. Sudhagaran, lodged in the Palayamkottai jail, to attend the funeral of the thespian tomorrow.

Mr. Sudhagaran, the disowned foster son of the Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa, was arrested on charges of attempt to murder and possession of drugs, and remanded to judicial custody.

In her telegram to the Chief Minister, the State DGP and IG, Prisons, Mrs. Sathyalakshmi pleaded that her husband be sent with escort to take part in the funeral of Sivaji Ganesan.

However, the Prisons Department advised Mr. Sudhagaran's counsel to move the court for bail as they had no powers to release him to attend the funeral.

As Mr. Sudhagaran was a remand prisoner under judicial custody, only the courts could enlarge him on bail and the Government could not grant him parole, Prison Department officials said.

But, Mr. Sudhagaran's relatives said there was little time for moving the bail application as the funeral was scheduled for tomorrow.
