Illegal detention of professor alleged
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, JULY 22. The Tamil Nadu Government Collegiate Teachers'
Association in a statement alleged police high-handedness and
unlawful detention of an English professor of the Presidency
College on July 21.
The association said Mr. R. Alagesan, sub-inspector, and Mr.
Anandan, constable, of Anna Nagar K-4 police station entered the
house of the professor, Dr. N. Gunasekaran, dragged him out and
took to the police station, despite his pleas of innocence. He
was hit on stomach, denied water and charged with being drunk.
The `accused' was detained illegally for more than 12 hours and
not permitted to contact friends or lawyer. He was let off at 2
a.m. on July 22.
Subsequently, Dr. Gunasekaran was admitted to a nursing home and
was undergoing treatment.
Dr. V. Swaminathan, TNGCTA General Secretary, said the
association had sent telegrams to the Chief Minister, the
Education Minister and the Director General of Police demanding
action against the officers. A complaint had also been sent to
the State Human Rights Commission.
