Steps to fill vacancies in hospitals

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 22. The Health Minister, Mr. P.
Sankaran, said here today that measures would be initiated to
fill up vacancies in the posts of doctors and other staff in
Government hospitals.
Presiding over the inauguration of the new Intensive Care Unit
at the Neurology Department of the Thiruvananthapuram Medical
College, the Health Minister said the vacancies would be filled
up either through employment exchange appointments or resorting
to recruitment on contract basis.
Earlier, inaugurating the ICU, the former Chief Minister, Mr. K.
Karunakaran, said subsidised treatment should be extended to the
poor patients even if it meant levying slightly higher user
charges from sections who could afford it.
The Thiruvananthapuram Mayor, Prof. J. Chandra, released a
souvenir on the occasion.
Among those who spoke on the occasion were Mr. V.S. Shivakumar,
MP, Mr. K. Mohankumar, MLA, Mr. Ajith Kumar, Medical College ward
councillor, Dr. V.K. Rajan, Director of Health Services, Dr. M.O.
Annamma, Director of Medical Education, Dr. Kesavankutty Nayar,
Medical College Principal, Dr. Mathew Thomas, Hospital
Superintendent, Dr. Rani Bhaskar, Head of Neurology Department,
and Dr. Ram Narayan, Head of Cardio Thoracic Surgery.
The ICU, which is jointly managed by the Cardio Thoracic unit,
is expected to vastly improve the treatment of neurology
emergencies, such as stroke.
