Assembly session begins today
By Our Principal Correspondent
RAIPUR, JULY 22. The third session of the Chhatisgarh Assembly,
beginning here on Monday, is expected to witness some fireworks
with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) all set to take on the
ruling party on various issues including the scandals and the
infamous lathi-charge on Opposition members outside the Chief
Minister's residence in April.
The BJP appears to be ready to confront the Congress on various
issues like suicide by farmers due to acute poverty and the so-
called furniture scandal. The noise to be made this time will be
louder since the national in-charge of Chhatisgarh, Mr. Madan Lal
Khurana, has visited the State twice and infused some life in the
party which was otherwise collapsing due to in- fightings.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the Leader of
Opposition, Mr. Nand Kumar Sai, said the Legislative Party would
devise a strategy to corner the Government. ``The Adivasis and
the Backward Classes have been the most victimised ever since the
Government took over. There are no doctors in the Primary Health
Centres and no teachers in the schools but the Government claims
to be totally dedicated to the upliftment of the BCs and the
adivasis,'' he added. Making a specific reference to the alleged
suicides by farmers due to poverty, Mr. Sai said the Government's
claims of seeds for every field have fallen flat due to these
suicides.
Some important Bills including the one on increasing the
allowances for MLAs is expected to be passed in this two-week
long session which will have 10 sittings. The Bill had been
tabled in the House in the last session but could not be passed.
