Film Review: Dhil
ONE'S STRENGTH should be used in a proper way. Whenever one
thinks something is wrong, he should raise his voice and fight it
out. If one thinks that something is being done against the law
one should always steer things the right way. This is what
happens to the protagonists of the movie ``Dhil'', produced by
Lakshmi Productions.
Kanagavel (Vikram) is a youngster who goes out with his lady love
Asha (Laila). There DSP Shanker (Asish Vidyarthi) comes fully
drunk and misbehaves with Asha, inspite of being requested
repeatedly to behave. Kanagavel does not know that Shanker is a
police officer. They start fighting and Kanagavel wins. The DSP
goes to hospital with a gash that requires 18 stitches. It leaves
a big scar in his left cheek. Kanagavel forgets the whole episode
but the DSP does not. He starts searching for the man responsible
for the scar.
On the day of Kanagavel sister's (Deepa Venkat) marriage the DSP
catches Asha. When Kanagavel comes to know about it he comes to
the DSP who allows Asha to leave. The wedding goes on without a
hitch. After being beaten up, Kanagavel is left on a railway line
to be run over by an on coming train. But he escapes.
Kanagavel's main aim in life is to become a police officer. He
applies for it and waits for the interview. When he is called for
the interview, he is spotted by DSP Shanker who comes to know
that he is alive and is trying to join the police force. He picks
up all the certificates, comes to the house of Kanagavel and
burns them in front of his family members.
How Kanagavel and his friends with the help of another police
officer Nasser, take on DSP Shanker and how they eliminate him
and a bunch of rowdies forms the rest of the story.
Vikram has once again proved that his success in ``Sethu'' was
not a fluke. Vikram has the ability and the potential that is
seen in most of the frames of the film. The fight with Adi (FEFSI
Vijayan) and the one with DSP Shanker in the climax are tedious
but Vikram shows his power and skill in these two fights. His
dance movements are also graceful.
In another scene wherein he and his friends go to a caste-based
meeting and say that DSP Shanker has talked ill about their caste
and makes him the target of the public, he shows not only courage
but also some brain behind it.
Laila is beautiful. In some scenes she tries her hand at acting
also and comes out with flying colours. FEFSI Vijayan as Adi is a
villain whose performance is convincing. The main villain is
Asish Vidyarthi as DSP Shanker, whose acting is noteworthy. Vivek
and Vaiyapuri, try to make the viewers laugh and they succeed to
some extent. The last scene wherein Vivek is operated upon is not
humorous. Paandu, Myilsamy, Sukran, Vasu and Raviraj are the
other supporting artistes.
Of the five songs tuned by Vidyasagar four will certainly make a
mark. Particularly the title song ``Dhil'' which has some good
lyrics, is bound to be the number one on the list. The song
``Machan'' does not fit in well. The camera work of S. Gopinath,
(``Dhil'' is his first film) is good. Dialogue by Bharathan adds
pep to the proceedings.
Dharani has taken care of the story, screenplay and direction.
S. R. ASHOK KUMAR
