Yamaha launches 'Crux R'
SURAJPUR, Uttar Pradesh, JULY 27. The newly rechristened Yamaha
Motor India (YMIL) today rolled out its first offering, a variant
of its existing 100 cc Crux motorcycle.
The four-stroke motorcycle, Crux R, priced at Rs. 41,000 (ex-
showroom Delhi), a premium of Rs. 2,100 over the Crux model,
would compete in the growing 100-110 cc domestic motorcycle
segment, YMIL marketing director, Mr. H. Sakuria, told reporters
at the launch here.
He said the company had set a target to sell 65,000-75,000 Crux R
motorycles in this fiscal apart from 1-1.25 lakh Crux
motorcycles, which were launched in December 2000. ``The Crux R
would supplement our four-stroke strategy. We plan to take a big
chunk of the market share," Mr. Sakuria said adding the company
had targeted to achieve a 21 per cent share in the domestic
market by 2003.
The erstwhile Yamaha Motor Escorts, which has now become a
wholly-owned subsidiary of Japan's Yamaha Motor Company following
the buy-out of the remaining 26 per cent stake of its partner
Escorts group, was hitherto known for its power, performance and
style motorcycles.
``We know that. But, the success of Crux which has so far sold
33,000 units has compelled us to launch this new model to
entrench ourselves in the growing economy and style segment," Mr.
Sakurai said. He, however, said the company would continue to
produce two-stroke motorcycles as long as the emission norms
permit them to do so.
``At present, the four-stroke 100-110 cc motorcycle segment
accounts for 73 per cent of the total Indian motorcycle market
which is expected to grow to 79 per cent by fiscal 2004," Mr.
Sakurai said. He said Yamaha occupies the fourth position with
about 14 per cent market share after players like Hero Honda,
Bajaj Auto and TVS-Suzuki in this segment. ``We are aiming to
achieve 15-20 per cent market share in the current fiscal," he
said.
The new variant would have features such as square headlight,
muffle protector, tachometer and auto chain tensioner for low
vibration.
