Bhagyashree, Pallavi in joint lead
Abhijit Sen Gupta
VISAKHAPATNAM JULY 28. Bhagyashree Thipsay of IDBI and Pallavi
Shah of LIC with four points each were jointly in the lead at the
end of the fourth round of the YMCA 28th National `B' chess
championship for women here on Saturday.
In the fourth round matches, third-seeded Bhagyashree Thipsay
playing black pieces defeated J.E. Kavitha of Tamil Nadu in 35
moves, while fifth seed Pallavi Shah with white pieces prevailed
over Krithka Nadig of Maharashtra also in 35 moves.
Top-seeded Anupama Gokhale had a bad day today, registering draws
in the third and fourth rounds. In the third round this morning
Anupama was held to a draw by the under-14 National champion
Eesha Karwade of Maharashtra. In a closed Sicilian defence game
the players fought it out on equal terms and eventually the draw
came about after 37 moves. In the evening match, Anupama was held
to a draw by Sowmya Swaminathan of Tamil Nadu.
Second-seeded Saheli Dhar Barua also lost half point when she had
to settle for a draw against M.R. Sangeetha of Tamil Nadu in the
third round. In a Kings Indian set up the match progressed to a
stage wherein the players seemed to be on even terms and a draw
resulted after only 23 moves. However in the evening Saheli
chalked up a win against Arpi Shah of Gujarat to stay in the
running.
Andhra Pradesh's under seven National champion P. Lakshmi Sahiti
also forced a draw against fourth seed Nisha Mohota in the fourth
