Mulayam criticises U.P. Govt.

LUCKNOW, JULY 29. The Samajwadi Party president, Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav, today criticised the Uttar Pradesh Government for not providing ``State honour'' to the cremation of the slain party MP, Phoolan Devi, in Mirzapur.

Addressing a `Rajbhar workers meeting' here, he said the district authorities had waited till the last moment for a directive from the Government in this connection. ``It is strange that the Government did not issue the directive as even former legislators and party leaders were given such an honour after their death,'' he added.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day after Phoolan's death, despite her being a Lok Sabha member. But the U.P. Government purposely denied the State cremation for some political reasons,'' he alleged and said he would raise the issue in the current session of Parliament. He accused the Government of ''insulting'' the community of Phoolan, who was forced to take up arms against the evils of the society.
