3 more remanded to police custody
By Our Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI, JULY 31. The Metropolitan Magistrate, Mr. M.C. Gupta,
today remanded three of the four accused in the Phoolan Devi
murder case to 14 days police custody. The Delhi Police Crime
Branch arrested them at Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh on Monday.
The three are Shekhar Singh, Rajender Singh alias Ravinder and
Rajbeer Singh.
The prime accused, Sher Singh Rana alias Pankaj Singh, was
remanded to police custody for 10 days on Saturday.
Counsel for the crime branch, Mr. Irfan Ahmed, said police had to
unearth the criminal conspiracy to get to the motive of the
killing.
The three had changed the numberplate of the Maruti car in which
they had escaped to Rishikesh after committing the crime. Hence
the police have to recover the numberplate and as well find out
the hide-outs where they might have stayed on the way to
Rishikesh, counsel said. Besides, a mobile phone and two SIM
cards which they had bought from a Delhi shop were to be
recovered. The chain of conspiracy led to Roorkee, Hardwar,
Rishikesh in U.P. and Yamuna Nagar in Haryana, and the accused
had to be taken to these places to tie up the loose ends of the
case, he said.
The investigating officer, Mr. Suresh Kaushik, said the accused
planned the murder so well that they appeared before the media
before giving up to the police to ensure that the investigating
agency does not conduct a test identification parade.
