Manipur remains cut off
By A Correspondent
IMPHAL, JULY 31. Manipur remained cut off from the rest of the
country today as some Naga organisations continued to impose
blockades on the National Highways 39 and 53.
Soon after the announcement by the Union Home Minister, Mr. L.K.
Advani, on the revision of the decision to extend the Naga
ceasefire beyond Nagaland, the United Naga Council and the Naga
Youth Front announced the blockade for another 72 hours.
Vehicular movement has been affected and essential commodities
could not be brought to the State. Prices of food and other
consumer items have sky-rocketed.
The Director General of Police, Mr. A.A. Siddiqui, said that the
security measures along the two national highways would be beefed
up so that essential commodities could be brought.
Meanwhile, the United Council of Manipur and other organisations,
which have been spearheading the anti-ceasefire extension, have
not called off their stir.
