Central team to study drought situation arrives

BANGALORE, JULY 31. A six-member Central team arrived here on Tuesday to study the drought situation in the State and assess the losses.

The team consists of Mr. P.K. Mishra, Managing Director, National Cooperative Development Corporation; Mr. K. Mazumdar, Deputy Adviser, Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission; Mr. J. Prasad of the Ministry of Animal Husbandry; Mr. R. Sethuraman, Deputy Adviser to the Union Ministry of Health and Environment; Mr. Vivekananda, Deputy Secretary, Union Ministry of Rural Development; and Mr. K. Manoharan, Joint Director, Tobacco Board (Chennai).

The members of the team held discussions with the Chief Secretary, Ms. Teresa Bhattacharya, the Revenue Secretary, Mr. Chikkanna, and other senior officials on the availability of drinking water, shortage of fodder and failure of mungaru rain, and sowing operations.

The team will divide itself into three groups and tour the various drought-hit areas for three days from Wednesday. The first team will visit Shahabad, Yadgir, Raichur, Deodurg, Kushtagi, Koppal and Hospet. The second will visit Ilkal, Humnabad, Bijapur, Indi and Sindagi, and the third Madhugiri, Tumkur, Pavagada and Kolar.

On the conclusion of the tour, the Central team will regroup here and hold further talks with the Government before leaving for Delhi to submit its report to the Centre.]
