Panel to probe 'irregularities' in Perambur flyover
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, JULY. 31. The State Government has appointed an enquiry
commission to look into the ``irregularities'' in the
construction of the unfinished Perambur flyover. Its chairman and
members will be announced later.
The Cabinet, which met on July 30, took the decision, based on
the findings of the Local Administration Minister, Mr. C.
Durairaj. He inspected the over-bridge after he had received
complaints from people, councillors and the Chennai Corporation
Commissioner.
Mr.Durairaj said people were badly affected by the delay in
completion and the Government had received many complaints. Asked
whether this amounted to interference in the functioning of the
civic body, he said it was not the case. It was people who
mattered, and in this case, people were being subjected to untold
hardship, he added.
The civic body incurred a huge cost-escalation on the project and
it was not in a position to complete the works before the next
local bodies elections, it was pointed out. Officials said it
would cost Rs. 34 crore to complete the project, instead Rs. 21
crore estimated earlier.
