Send factual report on arrests: Centre
By K.T.Sangameswaran
CHENNAI, AUG. 1. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs, has asked
the State Government to send in a `factual report' relating to
the arrests of the two Union Ministers, Mr.Murasoli Maran and
Mr.T.R.Baalu on June 30.
The letter has been sent by the Centre following the complaints
filed by the two Ministers with the Lok Sabha Speaker about the
police treatment to them. The correspondence was sent to the
government a few days ago, but it was not immediately known
whether the reply had been sent.
``The Union Government had sought details pertaining to the
arrests of the two Ministers'', a senior police officer said. As
far as the city police was concerned, it had already submitted
the details to the State Government. Four cases were registered
by the city police with regard to the Union Ministers. The cases
were later withdrawn by the State Government.
Official sources explained that when MPs lodged any complaints of
breach of privilege with the Lok Sabha Speaker or the Rajya Sabha
Chairman, these were forwarded to the Ministry of Personnel or
Home Affairs. It was then sent to the concerned State Government
for a response. The State collects the information from the
officials and replies to the Centre.
