Diverting attention
Sir, - The Prime Minister's offer to resign in the face of
allegations against the PMO's involvement in the UTI scam was a
ploy to blackmail NDA partners and aimed at diverting public
attention from the real issues. And Mr. A.B. Vajpayee is from a
party which talks about ushering in `Ram Rajya'. Lord Rama set a
high standard for himself. The Prime Minister, instead of
offering to resign, should have asked the officials against whom
allegations have been made to resign and face the probe instead
of lamenting about the behaviour of NDA allies.
One is reminded of the sycophancy of the Seventies when Indira
Gandhi used to threaten to resign. The Chief Ministers of all
Congress-ruled States would rush to Delhi and vie with one
another in issuing public statements requesting her not to do so.

Udupi, Karnataka
