Police officers resent circular on phone bill

By K. Manikandan

KANCHEEPURAM, AUG. 2. There is a widespread discontent among police officers here following a circular that excess amount in the official phone bills would be deducted from their salary. Police sources said a circular from the police headquarters in Kancheepuram recently had identified 24 `errant officers', mostly Inspectors and Station House Officers, in several stations in the district. Even DSPs of the sub-divisions were not spared.

The communication said the Inspectors and the DSPs mentioned in the circular had made calls from the official telephone, exceeding the ceiling, and thereby caused a sharp increase in bills. Hence the excess amount was being deducted from their salaries in two instalments. The sources said similar communications had been sent to officers in the neighbouring districts as well.

One officer was told that more than Rs. 5,000 would be deducted from his salary and now he fears that he will find it difficult to make both ends meet.

Terming the action as `unjust', the police officers said that the communication was relating to the phone calls made in April and May, when there was a hectic activity on the eve of elections.

Further, since April the hike in phone tariffs also contributed to the increase in amount, they said.
