Fresh guard for Telugu Talli
By J.S.Ifthekhar
HYDERABAD, AUG. 2. The Telugu Talli's search for a vantage spot
appears to have finally come to an end. The statue may get back
its prime place before the new gate of the Secretariat. The
statue, which symbolises the Telugu ethos, was damaged two years
ago while being shifted. Though a new statue has been sculpted,
it has not been installed anywhere yet.
The Telugu Talli plaza being developed between the Lumbini Park
and the new entrance of the Secretariat promises to be the most
beautiful square of the city. Authorities also plan to shift the
statue of Potti Sriramulu from under the flyover and install at
the new square. A concept plan of the Telugu Talli plaza prepared
by the MCH provides for granite pavement, greenery and water
fountains. The landscaping is expected to be completed and the
statues unveiled by November 1, the State Formation Day.
The corporation has also drawn up an integrated parking plan for
the Secretariat, NTR Gardens and Lumbini Park. At the north side
of the Secretariat a two-level parking complex is proposed on an
area of 8,840 square metres. About 450 two-wheelers and 200 cars
could easily be accommodated. This parking lot is planned
especially for the convenience of people visiting the
Secretariat. But after office hours it will also double up as a
parking facility for Lumbini Park visitors. Earlier, the
corporation decided to develop underground parking but the plan
was given up in view of security hazard and possible seepage from
the Hussainsagar lake.
Another parking slot is planned to be developed on the Mint Road.
This T-shaped lot will have lots of greenery. It will also have
space to accommodate about 100 cars and 300 two-wheelers.
Authorities are also thinking of constructing a `sky walk' to
help people cross the road. Apart from the safety aspect, the
foot overbridge will itself be a big attraction to tourists. The
sky walk will have a low-level ramp with lots of greenery. It
will provide a panoramic view of Lumbini Park, the NTR Gardens
and Necklace Road. "The whole thing will just fit into the
surrounding environment of parks and add to the appeal of the
area", says Mr. P. Randhir Reddy, Additional Commissioner,
Traffic and Transportation.
The civic body has further taken up massive programme of junction
improvement. Of the 180 junctions identified, 44 critical ones
are being taken up for immediate development. The deficiency in
the design of intersections is stated to be resulting in undue
delays, congestion, increased pollution and traffic snarls. The
junctions are planned to be improved keeping in view the vehicle
dynamics.
