Hyundai's April-July sales up

NEW DELHI, AUG. 2. Hyundai Motor has reported a pick-up in sales in April-July while Hindustan Motors recorded a drop during the same period. Toyota Kirloskar has registered a rise in sales in January-July.

Hyundai Motor India's sales have dropped by 3.6 per cent to 7,003 units in July from 7,265 units sold in the year-ago month.

Cumulative sales (April-July) have, however, increased by 8 per cent to 30,687 units from 28,277 units sold in the same period last fiscal, according to a company statement.

Total sales in this calendar year so far stood at 56,591 cars, an increase of 7 per cent over 52,832 units sold in the year-ago period.

The company sold 55 units of the luxury sedan Sonata which was launched in late-July.

Hyundai India managing director, Mr. Y. S. Kim, said the fall in sales was primarily a technical correction aimed at inventory rationalisation at dealerships. He said the company was confident of achieving its sales target of selling 1,500 Sonata cars in this fiscal.

Qualis' record sales

Qualis, the premium MPV offering from Toyota Kirloskar Motor, has achieved a record sales of 3,107 vehicles in July as compared to 2,301 units sold in the same month last year.

Qualis had earlier registered a record in March this year, selling 3,010 vehicles. The company since then has increased the production to meet the `stupendous demand' for the vehicle, according to a company release.

``Qualis has carved a niche for itself in the Indian auto industry with 16,646 units already being sold (January-July 2001) as compared to 11,209 units sold in the same period in 2000. The growth rate in the first half of 2001 (January-June) is 52.22 per cent over the same period last year, it said.

Qualis, launched in January 2000, has 35 per cent market share in the multi-utility vehicle segment, selling 21,785 Qualis (domestic sales) in its first year of operation itself, exceeding its annual target of 20,000 units.
