Assam Govt. to launch rural health service
By Barun Das Gupta
GUWAHATI, AUG. 2. The Assam Government is planning a State-level
service named Assam Rural Health Service (ARHS) like the Assam
Civil Service (ACS) and the Assam Police Service (APS) for the
benefit of the rural people. Those who join it will have to work
in the rural areas throughout their period of service.
This was announced by the State Health Minister, Dr. Bhumidhar
Barman, here today. He said a Bill would be brought in the State
Assembly for this purpose. Preparations for setting up the
service are afoot and are likely to be completed in six months.
Apart from medical graduates, those practising the Ayurvedic
system of medicine will be eligible to join this service. In
fact, many Ayurvedic doctors are willing to join it, according to
the Minister.
In line with its policy of strengthening the infrastructure in
the health sector, the State Government had submitted a Rs. 500
crore scheme to the World Bank for upgrading several district and
sub-divisional hospitals, he said.
