Wockhardt doubles Vitamin capacity
By Our Staff Correspondent
MUMBAI, AUG. 3. Wockhardt has more than doubled its capacity of
Vitamin B12 to 3,500 kg. The company ranks amongst the world's
top three producers of Vitamin B12 and is the only company in
South Asia and Pacific region to manufacture Vitamin B12.
Mr. Habil Khorakiwala, chairman, Wockhardt, said, ``Since 1998,
Wockhardt has increased its capacity five fold. In 2000, we
increased capacity from 700 kg. to 1,700 kg. This year, the
capacity has now more than doubled to 3,500 kg. The overall
quality of our product and consistent customer service in terms
of meeting individual specifications and delivery schedules, has
enabled Wockhardt to rapidly penetrate the very competitive
global market. We are already amongst the largest players in the
world and will seek to better this position in the coming years.
''The usage of Vitamin B12, the world over, is quite consistent
in the field of nutraceuticals. Vitamin B12 is necessary for the
formation of red blood cells, maintenance of a healthy nervous
system, and helps in the synthesis of DNA - the generative
material in all cells. Deficiency can cause anaemia leading to
symptoms such as excessive tiredness, breathlessness,
listlessness, pallor and poor resistance to infection. Moreover,
its deficiency can lead to neuropathy, which involves the
degeneration of nerve fibres as seen in diabetes.
