India-Sri Lanka finals: The story so far

Neighbours India and Sri Lanka met each other for the first time
at Old Trafford, Manchester on June 16, 1979 during the
preliminary round of the 1979 World Cup.
The Sri Lankans, who then were an ICC associate member, caused
the first ever upset in World Cup history by winning by 47
runs.Since then the two teams have now met each other on 69
occasions, with India winning 36 matches, the Lankans 28 and the
rest being a no- result.
The two teams will now, on Sunday, meet for the eighth time in a
final of a one-day tournament. The first occasion these two teams
clashed in a tournament final was in the Asia Cup in 1988, which
India won, and the last time was at Sharjah in October last year,
when the Lankans won by a huge margin of 245 runs!
