Germany thrashes Australia
KUALA LUMPUR, AUG. 4. Germany played according to the script that
coach Bernhard Peters wrote to trounce Australia 6-2 at the 11th
Sultan Azlan Shah Cup here on Saturday. The defeat was
Australia's heaviest since Barry Dancer took over the hot seat 11
months ago.
Peters, who took over as coach of the 1992 Olympic champion in
September, predicted his boys would run out winners if they got
off to a flying start against the former World champions.
And the Europeans did just that when Bjorn Michel gave them the
lead in the fourth minute. His bullet-like flick, off Germany's
first penalty corner attempt, hit the underside of the crossbar
before sneaking over the line.
Michel also scored in the 44th minute while two goals from Oliver
Domke (27 and 55), one from Matthias Witthaus and another from
Florian Kunz completed the rout. The Australians struck through
Troy Elder in the 24th and 47th minute.
