Lie-detection test for Phoolan murder accused

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, AUG. 5. The Delhi police will subject five of the accused in the Phoolan Devi murder case - Sher Singh Rana alias Pankaj, Rajender alias Ravinder, Vicky, Rajbir Gujjar and Shekher - to lie-detection test, to determine the exact sequence of events which led to the murder and subsequent events.

Vicky remanded

Meanwhile, Vicky alias Dheeraj alias Dhan Prakash, Sher Singh Rana's accomplice, brought here on Saturday, was remanded today to police custody for seven days by a city court.

Vicky, who was produced before the Duty Magistrate, Mr. Surinder S. Rathi, refused to participate in the Test Identification Parade. He said it had no significance as his face had already been shown to the witnesses. Vicky allegedly shot at Phoolan's personal security officer outside her residence at 44, Ashoka Road, on July 25.

He was arrested from Roorkee by a Crime Branch team in the presence of local police. The Delhi police said Vicky was nabbed from his sister's house where he had gone on the occasion of `Rakshabandhan.'

Police were confident of recovering a cellphone, two SIM cards and clothes worn by the accused at the time of committing the crime as Vicky had revealed the whereabouts of the cellphone.

A close associate of Sher Singh, Vicky was allegedly involved in the snatching of a Maruti car in 1997 from one Mr. Dalanwala in Dehra Dun. The car was used as an escort vehicle in the Phoolan Devi murder.

In another development, the prime accused, Sher Singh, reportedly revealed that he had committed the murder to get into politics.

PTI reports:

The Deputy Commissioner, Delhi Police (Crime), Mr. M. S. Upadhye, said Vicky had confessed to having participated in Phoolan Devi's murder on July 25 along with Sher Singh Rana.

He had accompanied Rana in two bank robberies at Dehra Dun and Roorkee.

Investigations so far had revealed that four persons were present at the time of Phoolan Devi's murder, with three involved in the shoot-out, and a fourth waiting outside in a separate vehicle.
